We hope you will have a pleasant tour with us. Thank you for joining us today as we travel towards Berat, a city where Albania’s past can be read in its hillside houses, stone streets, and castle walls. Settle into your seat, make yourself comfortable, and enjoy the journey. Please keep your seat belt fastened while the vehicle is moving. Your driver or guide will explain the practical arrangements for the day, including breaks, meeting points, and the time to return to the vehicle.

Before we arrive, let us get to know Albania. On a map, the country sits in southeastern Europe, on the western side of the Balkan Peninsula. Its coast faces the Adriatic and Ionian seas, while much of the interior is shaped by mountains, valleys, and rivers. Although distances may look short on a map, the landscape gives each journey its own rhythm. As you look out of the window today, notice the changing countryside and the everyday scenes along the road.

Albanian is the national language. If you would like to try a few words, hello is përshëndetje, and thank you is faleminderit. Even a small effort to use a local greeting can make an encounter warmer. The currency is the Albanian lek. During free time, it can be useful to have some local cash for small purchases. If you are unsure about a price or payment method, ask before ordering.

Albania’s history brings together many different periods. Ancient communities, Roman rule, the Byzantine world, and the Ottoman era have all left traces in the country’s buildings and cultural life. Albania declared independence in 1912. During much of the twentieth century, communist rule and isolation profoundly shaped everyday life. The changes that followed brought a very different relationship with the outside world. Today, the country’s story continues in its towns, villages, and the people you meet along the way.

Our destination, Berat, offers a particularly striking introduction to that layered history. Its historic centre joined the UNESCO World Heritage property shared with Gjirokastra in 2008. What makes it special is the relationship between the castle, the historic quarters, the river, and the surrounding landscape. Instead of looking for only one famous monument, try to see how these elements belong together. A broad panorama and a small architectural detail can tell different parts of the same story.

As we approach Berat, we will introduce the city and the landmarks around you. The audio guide includes stories about the castle, the hillside houses of Mangalem, and Gorica beside the Osum River. Your guide will confirm which places we visit today and the order of the stops. Please follow those instructions rather than using the story list as a fixed schedule. Any museum visits, meals, or optional activities depend on your booked programme and the arrangements explained by your guide.

In the historic areas, take your time and wear shoes suitable for uneven stone surfaces. These neighbourhoods are places of everyday life as well as heritage sites. Respect private doorways, ask before photographing people, and follow any rules displayed at religious buildings. If you stop for photographs, choose a safe place where you are not blocking the path. Keep an eye on your belongings, and check the meeting point and return time before leaving the group.

You can listen to each story through headphones, replay it, or read its transcript. For location-triggered stories, keep the guide page open and location access enabled. If a story does not start automatically, simply select it yourself. Now relax and enjoy the road to Berat. On behalf of BlissAlbania Tours, welcome once again. We are pleased to share this journey with you.
</details>

01

Castle approach · 50 m GPS trigger
Stop 1 · Arrival at Berat Castle

User:Terfili · Public domain

Listen to story View location ↗<details class="transcript">
Read transcript

Welcome to Berat, everyone. Imagine trying to build them without a crane, a truck, or an electric tool. Every stone had to be quarried, moved, and fitted into place by human effort. And the people who began that work lived roughly twenty-four centuries ago.

Welcome to the Kala, Berat’s castle. To understand this place, picture generations of builders returning to the same hill. One ruler repaired a broken wall. Another strengthened a gateway. Later families built homes inside the defences. The castle grew through all of them, and their work is still mixed together around us.

Its beginnings reach back to the fourth century before Christ, in the ancient world of Illyria and neighbouring Macedonian kingdoms. Among the earliest surviving traces are large, carefully shaped stone blocks, laid without mortar. Their weight and close fit helped hold the wall together. As we explore, look for changes in the masonry: the size of the stones, their arrangement, and the way later builders joined their work to older sections. A wall can hold several chapters of history at once.

The ancient city is generally identified with Antipatrea. You will hear that name often in Berat, although scholars have debated the identification. Later came Belgrad, a Slavic name meaning White City, from which the modern name Berat developed. It shares that meaning with Belgrade in Serbia, but this is a different city with its own story. Even the name has travelled through different languages and centuries.

Why did so many rulers want this particular hill? Think about the journey you have just made uphill. Approaching a defended entrance would have been exhausting and dangerous. From above, the defenders could watch the surrounding approaches. Below, the Osum valley provided a passage between the western lowlands and the interior. Holding this fortress meant controlling an important route, as well as protecting the community behind its walls. The beautiful view had a very practical purpose.

Roman conquest brought destruction around two hundred before Christ. But the hill’s usefulness outlasted the damage. In the Byzantine era, the defences were strengthened under Theodosius the Second and rebuilt under Justinian in the sixth century. Much of the castle we recognise today belongs to another major rebuilding in the thirteenth century, associated with Michael Komnenos Doukas, ruler of Epirus. The fortress kept changing hands and changing shape. In the fourteenth century, Berat was also an important centre of the Albanian Muzaka family.

The defensive circuit includes twenty-four towers, with different shapes and sizes. That variety is worth noticing: the builders adapted their defences to the terrain and to the needs of different periods. Towers gave defenders a place to observe the approaches and help protect neighbouring stretches of wall. Higher inside the fortress stood a separate fortified stronghold, offering another refuge if the outer defences failed. Getting through the first wall did not mean an attacker had won.

Ottoman rule began in fourteen seventeen, adding another long chapter. Repairs and alterations continued, while mosques joined the older Christian buildings within the citadel. Look for those changes as we walk: ancient foundations, Byzantine and medieval construction, and Ottoman additions, sometimes only a few steps apart.

And remember the people between the monuments. The Kala is still a residential neighbourhood. These lanes have carried shopping, conversations, family celebrations, and ordinary journeys home. As we follow our guide, enjoy that sense of continuity and respect the doorways of people’s homes. For all its battles and powerful rulers, perhaps the castle’s most memorable achievement is this: life inside it has carried on.
</details>

03

Emperor’s bust · provisional 15 m GPS trigger · approximately 2 minutes
Stop 3 · Constantine the Great

Annya.ch · CC BY-SA 4.0

Listen to story View location ↗<details class="transcript">
Read transcript

Take a look at the face before you. This is Constantine the Great, an emperor whose decisions changed the course of European history. Here in Berat, his bust invites us to connect this ancient hill with the wider Roman world.

Constantine was born at Naissus, today’s Niš in Serbia, around the year 272. He is often associated with the emperors of Illyrian origin: powerful figures from the Roman Balkans who rose through the army and imperial service. Here, Illyrian describes an ancient regional background; it should not be confused with a modern nationality.

He became emperor in 306. After years of civil war, he emerged as sole ruler of the Roman Empire. But his most lasting influence reached far beyond the battlefield.

In 313, Constantine and his fellow emperor Licinius agreed on religious freedom, including protection for Christians. Imagine what that meant for communities that had experienced persecution: the possibility of worshipping openly, recovering property, and building a more secure future. Christianity became increasingly influential under Constantine, although it became the empire’s official religion only under a later emperor.

Then, in 330, he dedicated Constantinople, his new imperial capital on the site of Byzantium—today’s Istanbul. That city became the centre of the empire we now call Byzantine.

And Berat? This bust commemorates Constantine here; it is not evidence that he founded the castle. His connection is to the wider Roman and Christian heritage that helped shape the city over the centuries. The rebuilding of Berat’s defences under Justinian came much later.

As we continue among the castle’s churches and stone lanes, keep that wider world in mind. This small neighbourhood belongs to a story that stretches across the Mediterranean.
</details>

04

Church · 7 m GPS trigger · approximately 3 minutes
Stop 4 · Saint Mary of Blachernae

Marcin Konsek · CC BY-SA 4.0

Listen to story View location ↗<details class="transcript">
Read transcript

As we walk through Berat Castle, the number of churches may surprise you. Behind these defensive walls, generations made space for worship as well as protection. Churches, chapels, sacred paintings, and later mosques tell the story of a city with a deep religious heritage, shaped by different communities over many centuries.

Here we are at Saint Mary of Blachernae, known locally as Shën Mëri Vllaherna. Small in size, it carries an extraordinary depth of history.

The church we see today is generally dated to the early thirteenth century. Yet it stands above an older structure, with foundations thought to reach back to the fifth century. That is the four hundreds: the early Christian world, many centuries before the present walls and paintings. Some early Christian architectural pieces were reused in the later building. Think of them as fragments of an earlier chapter, carefully carried into the next.

The name Blachernae connects us with devotion to the Virgin Mary in the Byzantine world, especially the celebrated sanctuary in Constantinople. The regional heritage authority also points to a church with the same name at Arta, a centre of the medieval Despotate of Epirus. Berat belonged to a wider network of religious and artistic connections.

If the church is open, enter quietly with your guide and let your eyes adjust. Notice how daylight reveals some details and leaves others in shadow. Look down, too: the floor includes a decorative rosette, a small reminder that sacred art surrounds the visitor rather than appearing only on the walls.

The wall paintings were created in fifteen seventy-eight by Nikolla, the son of the celebrated painter Onufri. Try reading them as a story in pictures. Follow the horizontal bands, noticing individual holy figures and scenes from the biblical story. Faces, gestures, and relationships between figures help communicate meaning. These are devotional images, intended for prayer and contemplation as well as admiration.

There is another, less visible part of this church’s story beneath the entrance chamber, or narthex: a water cistern. While the paintings speak of spiritual life, stored water reminds us of everyday needs on a fortified hill. A cistern stores water; it need not mark a natural spring.

Before leaving, take one last look at the meeting of stone, colour, and light. This modest church preserves the work of builders and painters separated by centuries, brought together in one intimate space.
</details>

05

Holy Trinity · 10 m GPS trigger · approximately 3 minutes
Stop 5 · Holy Trinity Church

AlbanianBus

Listen to story View location ↗<details class="transcript">
Read transcript

Pause here and take in the whole building. Against the castle walls and rocky hillside, Holy Trinity is one of Berat’s most recognisable sights. Its compact shape, red brickwork, and raised central dome make it look almost like a miniature model of a Byzantine church. But this is a real place of worship, carrying more than seven centuries of history.

Locally it is called Shën Triadha. Its dedication refers to the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, understood in Christian belief as one God.

Look at how the building rises towards its centre. Its plan forms a cross within a square, with the dome above the crossing. Notice, too, the contrast between pale stones and reddish bricks. The brickwork helps give the walls their distinctive pattern, turning a practical structure into something wonderfully decorative.

Who made it possible? The church’s patronage is commonly associated with Andronikos Angelos Palaiologos, a Byzantine governor of Berat in the early thirteen hundreds. The regional heritage authority reads its surviving inscription as dating construction to the reign of Emperor Andronikos the Second, between twelve eighty-two and thirteen twenty-eight. The inscription helps anchor this beautiful building in the political world of late Byzantium.

If entry is available, follow your guide inside and look at the two columns. They are reused architectural pieces, given a new purpose in this medieval church. Their earlier setting is uncertain, so imagine the ancient world they came from without assuming a particular Greek temple.

There is another story on their surfaces. Researchers have documented carved crosses and Greek inscriptions, traces of people who interacted with this sacred space over generations. Some marks may express devotion or remembrance. They bring us closer to individual visitors whose names and lives have otherwise disappeared. Look carefully, but please leave the stone untouched.

Holy Trinity also preserves rare Byzantine-period wall paintings. Unlike Saint Mary of Blachernae’s later decoration, these take us back towards the medieval church’s own beginnings.

Its more recent history includes hardship. According to local accounts, the church was used as a storage depot during communist rule, when religious life in Albania was suppressed. Picture that change: a space created for prayer given an entirely different purpose. Its survival allows us to encounter both its artistic achievement and that difficult chapter.

Before we move on, look once more at the dome, the patterned walls, and the setting. Holy Trinity rewards a photograph, but it rewards a closer look even more.
</details>

06

White Mosque ruins · 30 m GPS trigger · approximately 90 seconds
Stop 6 · The White Mosque

Pasztilla aka Attila Terbócs · CC BY-SA 4.0

Listen to story View location ↗<details class="transcript">
Read transcript

These low walls belong to the White Mosque, a reminder that Berat Castle’s story continued into the Ottoman centuries. Imagine soldiers and officials stepping away from their duties to gather for prayer. The name reflects the pale limestone used in its construction. Look for the outline of the prayer space and the surviving base of the minaret, which once rose above it.

You may wonder why this mosque survives as ruins while some nearby churches remain standing. The explanation reaches back well before our own time. The White Mosque suffered severe damage during nineteenth-century unrest associated with Ottoman reforms. Later, Albania’s communist campaign against religion brought destruction and disruption to both mosques and churches across the country.

A ruined monument also presents a different conservation task from a standing building: protecting original walls is not the same as rebuilding everything that has disappeared. The ruins alone cannot tell us how much maintenance is happening today.

As we leave, remember the people who once prayed here. It cannot survive for long without water.

Here at the great cistern, we meet one of Berat Castle’s most important defences: a reserve for the people and soldiers living high above the river. Drinking, cooking, and everyday life depended on a reliable supply. During a siege, leaving the walls to fetch water could become dangerous or impossible.

Known locally as Saranxha, this medieval reservoir collected and stored rainwater. Its partly underground construction helped keep the water cool and sheltered from evaporation. Look at the masonry and the arched structure: this was practical engineering, designed to hold a precious resource over time.

But what happened when the rain stopped? One local account describes enslaved people carrying water uphill from the Osum during dry months to replenish the cistern. That detail remains an oral tradition rather than a verified historical record. Even imagining the climb helps us appreciate the enormous labour that moving water required.

As you look towards the valley, consider the paradox: a river below, but water security still a daily concern above. Height protected the castle from enemies while making supplies harder to reach.

These stones remind us that a fortress depended on more than towers and weapons. Its endurance also rested on storage, planning, and the work of people whose names rarely enter the history books.
</details>

08

Red Mosque · provisional 5 m GPS trigger · approximately 1 minute
Stop 8 · The Red Mosque

Pasztilla aka Attila Terbócs · CC BY-SA 4.0

Listen to story View location ↗<details class="transcript">
Read transcript

Look up at the surviving minaret. Below us, the Osum winds through Berat, separating the historic quarters of Mangalem and Gorica. Follow the rooftops, the river, and the valley stretching beyond the town. From up here, it is easy to understand why this hill became a fortress.

The mountains surrounding Berat also belong to its storytelling. One local legend imagines Tomorr and Shpirag as two giant brothers who fell in love with the same young woman.

At first, neither knew that his brother loved her too. When the truth emerged, affection turned into jealousy. Neither would give way, and their rivalry became a terrible fight.

Tomorr attacked Shpirag with a sword, leaving long, deep cuts across his body. Shpirag struck back with a heavy club, battering Tomorr with wounds of his own. Their struggle continued until both brothers were mortally wounded.

In one telling, a divine power, angered by their violence, turned them into stone. They became the mountains that bear their names: the long furrows of Shpirag recalled the sword’s cuts, while Tomorr’s broken, rugged outline remembered the blows of the club.

When the young woman learned what had happened, she wept without end. Her tears became the Osum River, flowing between the two mountains. Love, jealousy, and grief were written into the landscape.

There are different versions of this legend; this is one of Berat’s ways of giving familiar mountains a human story.

Now take your time. Enjoy the panorama, take photographs, and perhaps picture those two brothers in the distant landscape. White walls, red-tiled roofs, and rows of dark-framed windows seem to rise one above another. Pause for a moment and follow that pattern from the river towards the fortress. This is the view that has given Berat its most famous nickname: the city of a thousand windows.

In Albanian, you will also hear the expression one window above another. It describes the way the houses appear to stack themselves against the slope. A thousand windows is a poetic description, rather than a number to count. Together, the windows turn an entire neighbourhood into one of Albania’s most recognisable landscapes.

Now look more closely at the architecture. These are traditional Balkan houses shaped during the Ottoman period, adapted with remarkable ingenuity to Berat’s difficult ground. Solid stone lower walls anchor the buildings to the hillside. Above them, lighter upper storeys, often using timber construction, create more comfortable living spaces. Projecting rooms and broad eaves give the facades depth, while tiled roofs step upwards with the terrain.

The windows are especially important. Arranged in generous rows, they bring daylight into the rooms and open the houses towards the view. From a distance, their repeated shapes create harmony; close up, you will notice differences between one house and the next. The neighbourhood is beautiful because generations of builders found related answers to the same challenges of space, light, and slope.

In much of Mangalem, the ground is too steep and crowded for large gardens or courtyards. Many house entrances open directly onto the narrow alleys. Imagine stepping outside your home and immediately meeting a neighbour, hearing a greeting, or watching someone carry shopping up the lane. Here, architecture brings domestic life close to the street.

Across the Osum lies Gorica. Historically, during the Ottoman period, Mangalem was predominantly the Muslim quarter, while Gorica was predominantly Orthodox Christian. These are descriptions of the communities that shaped their histories, rather than rules about everyone living here today. Mosques and churches preserve those different traditions, while the houses share much of the same regional building language. The river separated the neighbourhoods, but bridges, trade, and everyday encounters connected them.

And behind these windows is another part of Berat’s identity: hospitality. The idea of an open door expresses a willingness to receive a guest warmly. In a traditional home, welcoming a visitor meant making time, offering a seat, and bringing something to the table. As you wander, you may see doors standing open or residents greeting passers-by. Enjoy that warmth, and enter a private home when its host invites you.

A particularly sweet welcome is gliko: fruit preserved in thick syrup, often retaining its shape and texture. Unlike a smooth breakfast jam, it can be enjoyed a small spoonful at a time. Coffee or tea and homemade preserves turn a simple visit into a shared moment. Ask your guide where you can try local gliko during your free time, or look for places openly welcoming visitors for refreshments.

We invite you to explore these public alleys for yourselves. Walk slowly, notice the stone thresholds and wooden details, and look back whenever the view opens between the houses. From Gorica, enjoy Mangalem as a whole; inside Mangalem, discover its smaller, more personal details.

There will be time to enjoy lunch, take photographs, and wander. Before leaving the group, confirm your meeting point and return time. Then enjoy Berat at your own pace: its beautiful architecture, its welcoming people, and the life continuing behind those famous windows.
</details>

11

Gorica Bridge · provisional 10 m GPS trigger · approximately 3 minutes
Stop 11 · Gorica Bridge — Farewell to Berat

AlbanianBus

Listen to story View location ↗<details class="transcript">
Read transcript

We have reached Gorica Bridge, our final stop in Berat. Take a moment to look along its stone parapets, then towards the houses on either side of the Osum. After exploring a city of hills and narrow lanes, here we find a structure whose purpose is beautifully simple: bringing people together.

A bridge stood at this crossing long before the stone structure we recognise today. The seventeenth-century traveller Evliya Çelebi described a wooden crossing supported on stone piers. During the later eighteenth century, the crossing became a stone bridge, associated with the patronage of Ahmet Kurt Pasha, Berat’s powerful Ottoman ruler.

But the bridge has never been frozen in one moment of history. Floods damaged it, and wartime destruction broke its crossing during the upheavals around the First World War. The municipality reconstructed it in nineteen twenty-four, with further repairs in later years. What we see is the result of repeated efforts to keep the city connected.

Look at the succession of curved arches. They carry the walkway above the river, transferring its weight towards the supports below. Between those supports, the river passes through the openings. The gentle rise and fall of the bridge gives the crossing its distinctive rhythm. Its beauty grows from an engineering challenge: spanning flowing water with carefully arranged stone.

For residents, this was much more than a picturesque view. It linked Gorica with Mangalem and the rest of Berat, helping people reach markets, meet relatives, and go about their daily work. When the crossing was damaged, ordinary journeys and trade were disrupted. Rebuilding it meant restoring a vital connection between neighbours.

The bridge also belongs to a living religious tradition. Each year on January the sixth, Orthodox Christians celebrate Theophany, also called Epiphany, remembering the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. In Berat, the blessing of the waters culminates with a cross being thrown into the Osum from Gorica Bridge. Participants enter the cold river and try to retrieve it, while people gather to watch. For believers, this is an act of faith and blessing, rather than simply a winter swimming contest.

As our visit draws to a close, look back at everything gathered in this setting: the river from the mountain legend, the castle above, and the houses with their windows rising along the slope. We hope you have enjoyed discovering both Berat’s monuments and the everyday life around them.

On behalf of BlissAlbania Tours, thank you for spending the day with us.
